India’s 6G Vision: A Quest for Technological Dominance
Reading Time: 3 minutes

The world of technology is on the cusp of yet another transformation, and India is determined to lead the charge into the realm of 6G technology. With the promise of blazing-fast data speeds, almost 100 times faster than 5G, and network latency levels as low as 1 microsecond, 6G is poised to revolutionise the way we connect, communicate, and innovate.

What is 6G?

6G, the sixth generation of wireless broadband technology, is set to build upon the foundation laid by its predecessor, 5G. It aims to provide data speeds of up to 100 Gbps, making it a game-changer for various industries and applications. Beyond speed, 6G promises to enhance network connectivity, reduce latency, and harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) for automated infrastructure optimisation.

India’s Ambition for 6G

India has taken a bold step toward embracing 6G technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a comprehensive Bharat 6G vision document, showcasing India’s determination to not only adopt but also lead in the global 6G wave. The country envisions itself as a prominent supplier of advanced, relevant, and affordable telecom systems and solutions.

Moreover, India’s collaboration with the US-based Next G Alliance through a memorandum of understanding has the potential to establish a robust 6G intellectual property framework. This partnership is expected to boost the creation of 6G patents in India, aligning with the nation’s ambitious goal of securing 10% of global 6G patents.

Local 6G Initiatives

India has already made a significant mark in 6G technology development, with over 127 patents acquired globally. The country’s proficiency in software-based configurations, powered by AI, machine learning, deep learning, and algorithms, positions it as a natural fit for 6G’s reliance on intelligent software technologies.

Leading Indian companies are actively engaging in 6G research and development. For instance, Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has partnered with Finland’s University of Oulu to contribute to 6G-related research and standardisation. Qualcomm, a key player in the field, is collaborating with operators and companies to develop 6G technology tailored to India’s unique use cases.

Nokia, a renowned telecom equipment maker, has set up a 6G lab in Bengaluru, aiming to establish India as a global contributor to 6G technology design and development. The lab’s focus on ‘network as a sensor’ technology, which enables the network to sense objects, people, and movement without onboard sensors, aligns with 6G’s goal of bridging the digital and physical worlds.

The Road Ahead

While India is still in the process of rolling out 5G networks, the excitement around 6G is growing by the day. The country’s unique strengths in software-based technologies and local manufacturing capabilities could potentially lead to an early deployment of 6G. With the targeted global launch of 6G around 2030, India is actively positioning itself as a key player in shaping the future of high-speed wireless broadband technology.

In conclusion, India’s ambitious leap into the world of 6G technology is a testament to its determination to stay at the forefront of technological advancements. With the potential to reshape industries, enhance connectivity, and drive innovation, 6G holds the promise of a brighter and faster digital future for India and the world.
