Full Throttle: Mahindra’s Most Consequential Chapter Yet

Record sales, billion-dollar factories, a Batman-themed electric SUV, and global ambitions that could rewrite the playbook. Here’s everything that’s happened in recent months.

If you’ve been tracking India’s automotive sector, you already know Mahindra has been on a remarkable run. But the past few months have elevated that trajectory into something genuinely historic. Record-breaking sales, a Rs 15,000 crore manufacturing megaproject, the world’s first Batman-branded production car, and a 35,000-unit export deal. This is not a company in cruise mode.

Performance

A Fiscal Year That Broke Every Record

March 2026 and FY26 annual results

Mahindra closed FY26 with 6,60,276 domestic SUV sales, a 20% jump over the previous year and an all-time high for the company. March alone delivered 60,272 SUV units, up 25% year-on-year, with total vehicle sales across all categories reaching 99,969 units in a single month.

What’s particularly striking is the breadth of the growth. It wasn’t just SUVs carrying the weight. The light commercial vehicle segment (under 3.5 tonnes) hit an annual record of 2,89,597 units (+13%), while three-wheelers surged 30% for the full year, making it Mahindra’s fastest-growing business line. Even exports grew 18% annually, crossing 40,990 units.

“The financial year ended on a very positive note, with Mahindra clocking its highest-ever volumes in both SUVs and LCVs, a significant milestone for the company.”

The company’s complete pivot toward utility vehicles is now total: zero cars or vans were sold in March. The entire passenger vehicle portfolio is SUVs. That’s a strategic bet that has clearly paid off, with the Indian market now seeing more than half its passenger vehicle sales coming from the SUV segment.

Electric Momentum

41,000 Born-Electric SUVs, 32 Crore Kilometres

BE 6, XEV 9e, XEV 9S and now the XUV 3XO EV

Less than a year after launching its first born-electric vehicles, Mahindra has crossed a meaningful threshold: over 41,000 units of the BE 6, XEV 9e, and XEV 9S have been sold, collectively covering more than 32 crore kilometres on Indian roads.

The three EVs, all built on Mahindra’s proprietary INGLO platform, offer 59 kWh, 70 kWh, and 79 kWh battery packs with claimed ranges between 521 km and 679 km. They pack features rarely seen below Rs 30 lakh: triple screens, 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio, AR head-up displays, Level 2 ADAS, and a panoramic sunroof.

To extend the electric range further down the price ladder, Mahindra in January 2026 launched the XUV 3XO EV starting at just Rs 13.89 lakh. Based on the already-popular XUV 3XO (which crossed 1.8 lakh cumulative sales), the electric version targets urban commuters with a 39.4 kWh battery, a 0-100 km/h time of 8.3 seconds, and Level 2 ADAS on the top variant. Deliveries began in February 2026.

Culture and Limited Editions

The Dark Knight Returns — Again

BE 6 Batman Edition, March 2026

When Mahindra launched the BE 6 Batman Edition last year, all 999 units sold out in 135 seconds. Social media lit up with fans who missed their chance. So Mahindra did what any brand listening to its community would do: it reopened bookings.

The World’s First Batman Production Car

Created in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and inspired by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, the BE 6 Batman Edition is a satin black, gold-accented collector’s piece. The Bat emblem appears on hubcaps, quarter panels, the rear bumper, and even the “Boost” button. Carpet lamps project the logo onto the floor. The dashboard plaque, steering wheel, and key fob are finished in Alchemy Gold.

Bookings for the second chapter opened on 10th March 2026. Existing Batman Edition owners get priority delivery. Priced at Rs 28.49 lakh ex-showroom.

This kind of limited-edition storytelling, pairing a prestige entertainment property with a performance product, is unusual for an Indian automaker. It signals how seriously Mahindra is taking brand building alongside product development.

Global Expansion

35,000 Scorpio Pik Ups for Indonesia: Mahindra’s Biggest Export Deal Ever

Partnership with Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, February 2026

Mahindra’s international operations received an extraordinary boost in February when the company announced it will supply 35,000 Scorpio Pik Up single-cab units to Indonesia in 2026, its single largest export order ever, exceeding Mahindra’s entire export volume for FY25.

The buyer is Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, an Indonesian state-owned enterprise. The vehicles will be deployed under the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih project, a national initiative to set up village-level cooperatives that connect farmers directly to markets. The Scorpio Pik Up’s rugged build, high payload capacity, and low operating costs made it a natural fit for Indonesia’s mix of rough rural roads and agricultural terrain.

“By deploying the Scorpio Pik Ups as part of the Koperasi, we are strengthening a reliable logistics backbone that connects farmers to markets more efficiently.”

The vehicles, manufactured at Mahindra’s Nashik plant, will support first-mile aggregation, moving produce from farms to cooperatives, and intra-village logistics. Beyond the commercial significance, this deal anchors Mahindra’s broader strategy of positioning its commercial vehicles as enabling infrastructure for emerging economies.

Manufacturing

Nagpur: India’s Largest Auto and Tractor Plant, Rising by 2028

Rs 15,000 crore investment announced, February 2026

In its most significant manufacturing announcement in years, Mahindra revealed plans to build its largest integrated automobile and tractor production facility in Nagpur, Maharashtra, a 1,500-acre campus in the Vidarbha region with a 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar.

When fully operational, the facility will have the capacity to produce over 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors annually. The plant is designed around Mahindra’s next-generation NU_IQ platform and will be capable of producing ICE, EV, and future powertrain vehicles for both domestic and global markets.

Nagpur facility: key details

  • 1,500-acre campus in Vidarbha + 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar
  • Production target: 5 lakh+ vehicles and 1 lakh tractors per year
  • Rs 15,000 crore committed over 10 years across Maharashtra
  • 2,000+ acres acquired across three locations
  • Production start expected 2028
  • LHD model production also planned from 2028, opening Gulf and European markets

The location was chosen for its strategic connectivity: access to the Samruddhi Expressway, rail links, and proximity to both domestic and export corridors. Mahindra is also acquiring additional land in the Igatpuri-Nashik region to expand engine capacities and support its Advanced Technology business. Left-hand drive production beginning in 2028 will further unlock Gulf and European markets for Mahindra’s full ICE and EV range.

Research and Development

Chennai’s Innovation Hub Gets Bigger

Mahindra Research Valley expansion, February 2026

Alongside the Nagpur announcement, Mahindra revealed a Rs 196 crore expansion of its Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) campus in Chennai, inaugurated in 2012 by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and now one of India’s premier automotive R&D centres.

The expanded facility, set to be operational within calendar year 2026, will strengthen capabilities in advanced vehicle design, product engineering, and future technology development. MRV currently employs 5,000 engineers across its 125-acre campus; the expansion is expected to create around 2,000 additional jobs in engineering, research, and technical roles.

The investment signals that Mahindra’s manufacturing ambition is matched by its commitment to engineering in India, building the intellectual infrastructure to develop the next generation of global platforms.

What’s Coming

The Global Pik Up: The Scorpio-N’s Boldest Chapter Yet

2027 launch confirmed

Mahindra has officially confirmed what enthusiasts had long been waiting for: the Scorpio N-based pickup truck, dubbed the Global Pik Up, will launch in 2027. First shown as a concept in 2023, this will be the most significant reinvention of Mahindra’s pickup line in over two decades.

The production version will carry forward the concept’s design highlights and premium interior, with an expected mix of diesel and petrol powertrains alongside a 6-speed automatic and 4WD. Initial markets will include Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, with an India launch to follow.

The 2028 LHD production capability, timed with the Nagpur facility’s opening, will be critical here. It will allow Mahindra to bring its full SUV and EV portfolio to right-hand-drive export markets and, for the first time, seriously contest Gulf and European segments.
