Bharat’s 6G Odyssey: Navigating the Future with ‘Make in India’ Spirit

Reading Time: 2 minutes

India is boldly stepping into the future with a vision that echoes the ‘Make in India’ ethos. As the world races toward the next era of telecom technology, India is gearing up to lead the charge with its ambitious ‘Bharat 6G Vision.’ Let’s dive into the nuts and bolts of this groundbreaking endeavor and explore what it means for the nation.

As Nifty 50 approaches 21,000 and BSE Sensex nears the 70,000 mark, India stands at the pinnacle of equity markets. Amidst the euphoria, concerns about a market crash loom, yet a scientific approach encourages us to focus on valuations rather than headline numbers.

Telecom’s ‘G’ Race:

With 5G networks becoming ubiquitous globally, India is eyeing a prominent position in the development of 6G networks. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has initiated the Bharat 6G Vision, emphasizing the importance of building the technology indigenously and contributing to global standards.

The mission is clear – design, develop, and deploy 6G network technologies for ubiquitous intelligent and secure connectivity. Task forces, including multi-platform networks, spectrum policies, and innovative solutions, are collaborating to achieve this ambitious goal.

Phases of Progress:

Divided into two phases, the roadmap to 6G envisions exploration and idea generation from 2023 to 2025. The subsequent phase, from 2025 to 2030, focuses on identifying feasible use cases, conducting commercial-scale pilots, and positioning India as a leading global supplier of 6G IP.

Network Architecture:

6G networks will integrate terrestrial (5G and 6G) and non-terrestrial networks (satellite constellations). This convergence opens doors for India to leverage its space technology for seamless broadband connectivity, especially in rural areas.

The Bharat 6G Vision paper highlights potential use cases, ranging from healthcare to connected industries. While some are already enabled by 5G, others like tele-operated autonomous driving and holographic communication remain theoretical. Realism and careful assessment of technical requirements are essential for ensuring practical applications.

Machines, Not Just Humans:

A unique aspect of 6G is that its primary users will be machines, aligning with the perspectives of industry bodies and research groups. As smartphones evolve into one of many device types, India’s focus on connecting machines involved in complex tasks positions it at the forefront of technological innovation.

As India embarks on its 5G journey, the focus on developing an indigenous technology stack for 6G sets the stage for global leadership. Rather than a race to be the first, the emphasis is on capturing opportunities in global markets with a strategic ‘Make in India’ approach.

The early days of 6G research and development promise an exciting future with endless possibilities. India’s stakeholders are urged to be realistic, focusing on use cases, applications, and network capabilities. The ‘Make in India’ spirit is not just a slogan; it’s a guiding principle as Bharat charts its course into the revolutionary era of 6G technology.
